I am a fully licensed psychologist specializing in mood disorders in young children and autism spectrum disorder. I do psychological assessments, individual psychotherapy, family psychotherapy, psychological testing.

I taught in the New York City school system for five years with emotionally impaired children, gifted children, and then in a special program for socially maladjusted children. I then spent two years teaching in an inpatient child and adolescent psychiatric hospital in Michigan, after which I participated and later coordinated therapeutic preschool program. I spent two years on an NICU follow-up team at Sinai Hospital in Detroit. I received my Ph.D. in Special Education from the University of Michigan in 1977 and was licensed as a psychologist in 1982. I then worked with Dr. Stanley Greenspan at the Interdisciplinary Council for Developmental and Learning Disabilities, and was co-lead for the Fielding Graduate University doctoral program in Infant and Early Child Development, based in Santa Barbara, California

What do you like most about what you do?
Helping parents to feel hopeful about children and helping parents to recognize, nurture, and celebrate their child’s strengths.

What will happen at a first visit?
I will see parents for a developmental and family history and discuss their concerns. I will give them a series of questionnaires regarding their child’s sensory functioning, behavior, executive skill development, and other questionnaires related to the referral question. We will then set up an appointment for a video-taped play session in which each parent will have the opportunity to play with their child as they would at home.

I received my PHD in Infant and Child Development with an emphasis in Mental Health from Fielding University. What kind of work do you do at the Glovinsky Center?
I do individual psychotherapy with children, adolescents and adults who struggle with moods, are trying to cope with challenging feelings, understand their behaviors or navigate difficult relationships. I also work with parent-child relationships, provide parent support, and often see family members or care-givers of those impacted by anxiety or mood challenges.

I offer therapeutic groups for adolescent girls, mother-daughter relationships groups, sibling groups and facilitate parent education and support groups.

Where did you get your training and what is your educational background?
I earned a Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) degree in Health Studies and Psychology from the University of Waterloo, Ontario, Canada. I have a Master’s degree (M.S.) in Behavioral Health from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. My Master’s of Social Work degree (MSW, Clinical Specialty) is from Wayne State University in Detroit where I concurrently received graduate certification in Infant Mental Health.

What do you like most about what you do?
I like to see people develop a sense of compassion for themselves, feel connected with their strengths and realize they have the capacity to deal with issues in a way that makes sense to them. It’s wonderful when someone leaves therapy with a sense of how to take care of themselves emotionally.

What will happen at a first visit?
We talk about where someone is in that moment, where they were before, (what things brought them to that place) and where they want to get to. I want people to feel comfortable, hopeful and safe to be themselves. If it’s a child coming to therapy, I meet with just the parents at the initial session.

What kind of work do you do at the Glovinsky Center?
My therapeutic practice focuses on children and their parents.

I am especially interested in understanding the whole child and their unique learning style. Through play I am privileged to gain an understanding of how your child sees the world. The parent relationship is a crucial part of this process. Working together to understand your child brings stronger success to the therapy process.

Where did you get your training and what is your educational background?
I completed my undergraduate work at Eastern Michigan University and received a BA in Early Childhood Education.

I attended Madonna University and received my Masters in Clinical Psychology.

What do you like most about what you do?
Understanding how a child processes the world around him has always been a passion of mine. The therapeutic process and working with parents provides a continued view into this ever changing development.

I am also the Director of Temple Shir Shalom’s Preschool: The Learning Center. Having a significant understanding of child development and the educational process provides a well-rounded view to the therapeutic process.

What will happen at a first visit?
The first visit to my office is for parents only.  It is important to see if we are a good fit. Parents will share why they have sought out therapy.  For families that are unfamiliar with therapy I will explain the therapeutic process.  Before I will meet their child I will want to schedule an individual session with each parent.
